The Pokemon VGC (Video Game Championships) began in 2000 as the competitive wing of the Pokemon franchise, tied to the release of Pokemon Gold & Silver on Game Boy. Initially, tournaments were local or national, focusing on traditional battles with in game rules.

Early VGC used single battles, but by 2007, Double Battles became standard, shaping team strategy. The competitive scene adapted to mechanics introduced in each game, requiring players to constantly innovate. The community grew through online tournaments and official regional events, creating a competitive global culture.
